RESEARCH: My understanding of Laura Mulvey's idea on representation

'In a world ordered by sexual imbalance, pleasure in looking has been split between active/male and passive/female. The determining male gaze projects its fantasy onto the female figure which is styled accordingly'.

this statement was made by Laura Mulvey, who suggests that gender representation in music videos is gender biased because she believes that the world is biased in favour of males and that females are seen as objects of sexual desire and pleasure. She acknowledges that the 'male gaze' is an important technique used in music videos and marketing in order to entice and make males active in watching females in videos or advertisements as sexual and provocative.  she says this is done through the process of dismembering which draws the male attention to certain body parts in order to please the male gaze. Dismemberment is used frequently in music video genres such as Hip-Hop, R&B and Rap.

Here is an example of dismemberment and a good example of the objectification of females for the male gaze.
