My Understanding of Laura Mulvey's Idea On Representation : RESEARCH

‘’In a world ordered by sexual imbalance, pleasure in looking has been split between active/male and passive/female. The determining male gaze projects its fantasy onto the female figure which is styled accordingly’’.

This is a quote from Laura Mulvey, and tells us her views and ideas on gender presentation in music videos. Mulvey talks about the male gaze and how it is an important device that is exploited by music video makers and marketers. The male gaze makes the man active in watching sexualised woman and the woman passive because they have to dress accordingly.

Mulvey believes that females are dismembered when appearing in some music videos, for example within the Rap, R&B and Hip Pop female body parts are show close up in a sexualised manner for the male gaze.
