In lesson time we talked about the functions of a music video. I believe that one of the most important reasons for making a music video is to promote the artist along with the song that is being released. This is because music companies want their artists to become household names meaning they will be able to profit from the success of the artist they have promoted and funded, and with a good music video this can be achieved.
A music video should show close ups of the artist, because the artist should be sold at every opportunity. The majority of music videos are cut and edited to the beat allowing for a seamless combination with the music we hear and the visuals we see, this is also another important function of a music video.
Another aspect of more modern music videos is that of synergy. The best examples of synergy in music videos comes from looking at how company's pay artists or pay for music videos so they use their products or wear their clothing brand in music videos. By doing this, company’s can promote their products by having it associated with big name artists and bands. One example of marketing synergy in music videos is in the video 'Telephone' by Lady Gaga featuring Beyonce, at some point Gaga receives a call/message and the camera cuts to her phone clearly showing a Virgin Mobile Logo.
