Photoshop Tutorial/ Skills Development:RESEARCH
We had a tutorial about how to use photoshop and we got given a task to try create a tester digi-pack using template images and here are some pictures from the making of my tester digi-pack.
I found this tutorial really useful as now i have a better understanding on how to use Photoshop. However because of all the things that can go wrong i am slightly scared that the image i have wont work because this tutorial wasn't really that easy, especially when you don't really now how to use a Mac computer. Hopefully, things should go good. Here is what it looked like when i was finished, its clearly not completley finished as there are some things that are missing but for a first attempt this is what i created.

Learning How to Use Photoshop Elements : ANCILLARY PLANNING
In today's lesson Rebecca introduced us to Adobe Photoshop Elements on the Mac. The majority of the class had no clue how to use, however I've had past experience with Photoshop CS3 but this version on the Mac seems to work in a slightly different way although it wasn't completely alien to me.
The tutorial covered the basics such as, importing pictures, layering, adding text, and also adding effects. In class we had to learn these technical skills and then apply them and make a practice Digipak with images Rebecca had provided us.
The pictures we had to work with where pretty dire to say the least, they where uninspiring, as in the position and picture quality weren't great. I first began with adding a light bulb lawyer on top of the original image of the supposed artist, the light bulb would also go along with the name i had chosen for my artist 'Bright Spark'.
I then added text to the back cover with the names of the song that will appear on this album. Adding text is very simple and is almost second nature now when using Photoshop Elements.
I then played with the brightness and contract effects along with colour correction settings to add a different and more professional tone to the originally dull pictures. Below is how the finished practice Digipak looked.

Ancillary Products: RESEARCH
In our lesson today we had a basic tutorial on about what a digi-pack is and how both our digi-pack and advert should look and the content that should be in it.
A Digi-pack is something that is special and extra which happens to play on the Love that people have for music. They came around in the early 2,000's so they are a very current product. However unfortunately they aren't doing as well as they used to as people don't tend to buy them as much because of all the new technology that has been introduced. CD covers are still needed despite CD sales dropping because it promotes the artist's brand image by grabbing the readers attention. An example of this is Lily Allen's CD cover which is a very clear image of her looking quiet seductive and flirty, which is also her type of style. The image also uses the 'rule of three' which is basically makes sure the there is something that is interesting and that is a main focus for the audience to look at. Here is the image that i am talking about:
Some more reasons why digi-packs covers are still needed are that, they give information that the public will need to know such as the list of songs, who made the songs, why they were made and maybe even some personal facts about the artist. The Digi-pack should also give the public a little insight on how their songs may be and how they are as an artist just like how Rihanna's album cover relates to her new song "We Found Love". The rough type of edgey style that portrays through the image is the same style that shows through in this image. Also the name of her album on tattooed on her arm "Talk That Talk":
Some covers have strong artwork that the public may find intriguing and it then becomes collectable items which could even build the audienece's create a wider fan base. Ancillary products are important to a artist as they generate the most money needed, they give a new brand image,it alos builds a stronger fan base. The ancillary products allow the artist to be kept in the public eye.Without promotion of the artist people wont know about them and then their singles wont do as well and wont get anywhere as fast without the promotion they need.
Here a few more example of digi-pack covers that show how the artists have used a current theme throughout their videos and images:
RESEARCH: Summary of Class Discussion on Ancillary Products
In our lesson today we began discussing digipaks, the conventions behind them and the Dos and Dont's when we create our own.
First we established that a digipak is a modern approach to CD packaging, a great way to promote the artist/band and their direction. Digipaks are used to entice music lovers by adding value to the music and making the overall product seem worth the price.
We then went on to discuss what a digipak consists of and what should be on the album cover aside from the artist and title. We would need to make sure that our album covers, no matter how many panels it contained, had logos of copyright, barcodes, date and if possible relevant information such as featured singles or recent tours.

Class Discussion On Importance and Function of Digipaks To The Music Industry : ANCILLARY RESEARCH
The class discussed the importance and function of a Digipak, both for the artist and also the music industry as a whole.
What is a Digipak, and what are there importance?
A Digipak is a modern twist on the traditional CD packaging. They are visually more impressive and imposing because in essence that is what they are for, the focus is more on being artistic to sell and artist. They are usually made of thick cardboard.
- CD covers are an artists most primary form of advertisement.
- Digipaks elaborate and sell and artists image, or if the artist is new it creates one for them.
- It also gives information about the genre of the artist and specific album.
- It is a Tangible thing that tries to appeal to the 'music lovers', its something the can hold and even collect.
- Even when buying digital albums and single the artwork is stilla attached to it, therefore it is a form of identity for a song and album.
- Without promotion like this an artist might find it hard to break into public consciousness.
- A striking Digipak can entice a wider audience to an artists album, that is the power of great ancillary pieces.

FEEDBACK: Rough-cut
Annabel disliked the color effect we had on the video. She said it didnt look too good and said we should think about taking it out.
Annabel liked that we took into account her worries that thier wasnt enough lipstick on the artist, we made sure the new shots in the rough cut had our artist wearing it, she said it looked professional.

She loved Tahmids editing of the Doppelgänger effect. I personally think its one of the best things in our video.
Rebecca loved the rough cut and explained that if we fix and smooth out some editing glitches it would be a very good music video.
SKILLS: Development
The planning and production for our music video in A2 differs substantially from the planning and production from our AS. From the planning side most of the aspects were very similar such as researching and creating an image of our video accompanied by a storyboard. However the storyboard was different from the one I created in AS because it did not need to be in any chronological order as our music video did not follow any narrative where as the thriller video did. Therefore we had to put most of our focus on location, the artists's image and how we would edit it to look like a professional music video. As for production the filming required us to use a varied range of camera angles for the base tracks as that is what our music video would mainly consist of. Furthermore the editing had to be done completely differently to the way we did it for our thriller video because we would be editing to the beat and cutting from shot to shot without the use of sound bridges but instead by using transitions and effects such as using split-screens. We also had use base tracks as the foundation of the editing process. We also had perfectly sync the video to the sound because we had make artist lip-sync the song.

Reason For a Teaser Trailer : PRODUCTION
When we finished editing our Music Video I had an idea to also produce a Teaser Trailer. My reason for this is that having a teaser trailer before publishing the full video is slowly becoming the norm in the music video industry. Below is an example of the artist 'Professor Green' releasing a teaser trailer of his hit single 'Read All About It'. The idea is that it builds up our artists fan excitement and anticipation for a Music Video.
Below are photos of me creating the Teaser Trailer:

Research
Due to the fact that I have no clue on how to use Photoshop I thought I would do some research on YouTube, so I came across this video on basic Photoshop skills. I actually found it quite useful. Funny enough I have Photoshop downloaded on my computer but do not know how to use it so I thought I would give it a try as we are going to need it when it comes to making our digiPac. To be honest I found it really confusing, but I’m working on it.
Research on Digipak ideas
The reason why I choose this picture is because it really stood out to me, I liked the way they are engaging with their fans through their pose , the picture says allot about their album it demonstrates a fun , party like sense. This picture made me realise that the imagine has to give a message and must demonstrate the theme so the audience gets a sense of what the music will be like.
This picture also really stood out to me, it’s different and very eye catching it sort of demonstrates loneliness as well as independence, I also choose this picture because we are using a lily Alan song so it would be good to get some ideas from her.
While I was doing my research, I came across this website and I started to read more into it and it gave me some good ideas of what to expect in my digi Pac J
Rough Cut Evaluation
Once we finished our rough cut, we started to think about improvements. We talked to our teachers and discussed several points that needed changing, the colour and contrast for example was too light and didn’t go to what we planned. I think we need to use the contrasting tool more effectively so it allows us to get that cinematic look. We also need to make sure we use the same colour throughout the video. With the base tracts I think it wasn’t much of a problem, I honestly think we done a good job with that. The criticism that we got was fairy understandable we had a clip of canal and it didn’t quite go with our music video so we decided to cut it out as advised by the media teachers. We were also advised to use gaps between our split scenes other than that they were pleased with our video.
Digi Pac ideas
I have been thinking about how I would like my digi Pac to look like and I was browsing through couple potential pictures but really liked this one, I know I can’t use this one but something maybe like this. I also noticed how our artist is very photogenic which is a very good thing puts us in a good advantage. I think this is a good picture as it really draws in the audience’s attention, she is looking the mirror kind of demonstrates two sides to her. In addition it goes very well with the theme of our music video. i hope to take a picture very simular to this.
New Editing Skills Learned During Editing Of My Music Video : SKILLS DEVELOPMENT
New Skills Learnt While Editing The Music Video:
The major new learning point in editing this year was of using base tracks. Base tracks allowed us to place 4 to 5 clips under each other and just cut between them to the beat, this allowed us to have a flowing change from shot to shot, it also allowed the change to be flowing and natural.
I learned how to do the Doppelgänger Effect. I learned to slice shots and then put them under other clips that have also been sliced to create the illusion of the same person looking at themselves.
Cutting clips seems like an easy thing to do, however cutting clips on the beat of the music was a little challenging as you had to hit the beat spot on as a second either side wouldn't create the same flowing cut.

Teacher Feedback
You didn't eject your video drive!
Your entire project went off-line - the next student to use the mac that you were on found your project still open but off-line. Marisa has reconnected everything and has saved it as RECOVERED. You will need to make sure that this project is ok - you might find that the one you saved before lunch has bits off-line.
You must remember to eject your video drive before you pull the leads out.....

Inspirational Ideas For A Digi-pack
How To Make A Digi-pack
I was looking on YouTube for examples of digi-packs that have been made, and because i never had a tutorial for how they should be made, i found this very useful. I don't know if on the Macs we have in college that this is how its meant to be done but i have a much clearer knowledge of how to make it. So here it is and you can see what i mean...
Editing on The 22nd Of November : PRODUCTION
Today we concluded the editing of our video. We have fixed and smoothed out the mistakes that were spotted in the video. Its going really well so far, were just about done. The Music Video is completely done, all that is adding on colour correction and adjusting the brightness and contrast because we want to achieve that polished cinematic look.
We got additional feedback from our second teacher Rebecca Morris. Rebecca explained to us that having a black border when we split the screen into mini clips would make it look more intentionally done and professional and it will keep peoples eyes away from looking at where each box should connect. The screen-print shows the effect with the added boarders.
We also received feedback from Osman (Trainee Media Teacher), he explained that Talia, our artist looks a very static in some shots, he went on to say that this can be disguised using good effective and flowing editing, which we feel confident that we have achieved.

Fellow Students Feedback On Rough Cut
Positives From Students:
- The lip synchronisation is perfect and actually seems like that is the artists own song and voice.
- The locations, Mise en scene and Make-Up look good on camera and adds professionalism.
- The Doppelgänger effect works extremely well and is one of the best things about the Music Video.
- Editing is done well; no one shots is shown more than it is needed to be.
- The use of the camera was excellent, some of the shots looked great and worked well.
- The ending of the video isn't great because it would look better ending on the walking foot with a fade at the end of it rather than her face looking straight at the camera.
- When there is 3 to 4 shots places on the screen at once it look unnatural and forced, also they seem to spill over each other and would look much better and artistic with some sort of boarder around them to distinguish one shot from another.
- The tint effect takes away from the natural vibrant look of the video and locations.
Teachers Feedback Of Rough Cut
Annabel and Rebecca watched our Rough Cut and gave us similar points of feedback.
What Annabel said:
. Firstly Annabel did not like the tint effect that I felt made our video look more cinematic and professional, her exact words where 'Its like watching the video through fog'. When watching it again I ended up agreeing with her as the tint did take away from the true vibrant colours of the natural video.
. She also disliked the video between 2.40-2.45 because she that that the shot that was there felt very random and served no purpose to the overall feel and look of the video, also suggesting that it broke the continuity and flow of the video.
. Annabel also loved our Doppelgänger effect on the bench, she said that took great technical planning and that Tahmid edited extremely well as it looked so realistic.
What Rebecca said:
. Rebecca said that from 3.03 to 3.13, where there is multiple shots on the screen, that we should put boarders around them creating a more polished look because with the boarders it feels messy and looks out of place within the video.
. Rebecca felt that our very last shot should be of Talia walking towards the camera rather than ending on her face because that clips go's along with the lyrics 'Let’s see how we go'.
Possible Digipak Ideas
While thinking about my Digipak album cover, I began to form the idea of 'body art'. The idea that my artist is covered in art would connote the stylishness, abstract thinking and also would be unique. Below you can see my initial rough designs, I will look too built on this foundation design and hope to build something that looks very professional.

Here is the making of a music video, I feel this is useful because it shows how they filmed it, and since my group have only just finished filming its good to see the difference. Obviously our video has been filmed a lot differently since we don't have as many cameras and a whole production team but we have in a way filmed our video rather similarly to how this video has been filmed.
This is also useful to us because their genre relates to our target audience.
Teacher Feedback On Roughcut: PRODUCTION
Today we showed Annabel (our teacher) the rough cut of our video, she was pleased with what we had done so far and has no problem with knowing that we will be able to finish it on time.
However there are some things that we have to change. Firstly, she noticed that there are 2 random fast motion images of our artist in the video and she said that it doesn't really make sense to put them in as it doesn't go with the whole video. She, said that some shots are a bit longer than they need be, so we should cut them down. Next she noticed that we tend to rely on one specific shot too much and it isn't actually one of the best shots that we have, and because we end it with that same shot, she said that we should change it and end it with our artist walking away as it goes with the lyrics which are "let's just see how it goes" so its as If she's walking away with an open mind. We did put that in just before we put in the last close up. Another thing that Annabel noticed was that we have a split screen, where Talia appears four times, but sometimes there's a black out in one corner, she said that we could use it but just don't leave one corner black because it looks slightly odd.
On the other hand, she did have a lot of good things to say as well. She said that it is clear that we worked very hard on it and that she loves the 2 way shot of Talia looking at herself, it works really well. She also said she likes the image that we made, it suits the genre and our artist fantastically. Another thing she liked was that, it is edited very well because each shot fits and links to the following shots. Annabel then said that our video is incredibly good and the planning comes through, and we should be proud of ourselves. So overall Annabel is confident in our video. Even though all of our feedback may seem to be a lot, it isn't because we have taken everything on board and have already started to fix things.

DAY 3 of Filming Pictures : PRODUCTION
This is Talia doing another base track at the garden that we were lucky enough to be able to film in. in front of the beautiful pink flowers that bring our the colour of her lipstick. |
I (Jade) took this photo because i feel that if we don't get a chance to do a full photoshoot we could use this as my digi-pack photo. |
Just a random image that i think is nice- we were just trying out the camera to see how she photographs and i like this angle because it shows off the pure and Innocent look that we were aiming for. |
This is the culture wall at Dalston as you can see the only way that we could of shot this with our artist directly in front of the shot would be to do a low angle shot and it turned out well. |
Our artist Talia singing the entire base track |
Here I (Jade) am just checking that the tripod is steady and ready to film Talia, and making sure that it is positioned correctly so that her head wont be out of frame again. |
And here is Saydul enjoying Talia's performance, again just checking that everything is going to plan. |
Skills Development: PRODUCTION
In AS my group didn't plan our Thriller very well as we didn't all agree on things, so we thought when it comes to filming we will just do whatever comes to mind. We had a very basic idea of what we wanted our thriller to be about but when it came down to filming that wasn't nearly enough. The story board we made was very simple so when it came down to the pitch we had to do, we all had to put very specific detail into what we were hoping our video would turn out to be- even if the details we were giving weren't actually going to happen. Since we didn't have much to go on, we had to work a lot harder than we needed to- not because we weren't working hard in the first place, but because we literally had no ideas to bring to life and that was because we all had a set idea of how we wanted our thriller to be but because all our ideas clashed we didn't come to a final descion which made us work VERY hard. In a way the approach we had turned out to be not so bad since we started working as a unit and put the best ideas together and produced our thriller "OMNIPRESENT". We ended up getting a B for it and we were all very proud.
Comparing last year to the Music Video that we are making now things are very different. My group planed our video thoroughly and when we filmed we stuck to our story board tightly. We all work good as a team and our fantastic individual ideas combine together to make our video the BEST it can be. There is one thing that worked better in my AS year than it did now and that is that the actors/performers were all apart of my own group so we knew their schedule well, and any time we had a lesson we could film what we needed, even if we had to re-film something it wouldn't be much of a problem because our actors were always around. Whereas its a bit difficult now since our performer isn't in our group so fitting filming around her schedule is difficult. We as a group have to bare in mind that our performer doesn't owe us anything, the outcome of our video doesn't affect her in the slightest- Yes she wants us to do good but, what grades we get still don't affect her. So far our video is looking really and our teachers seem to like it so that's a plus. I look forward to seeing the final piece.

Third day of filming (15.11.11): PRODUCTION
Today me (Jade) and Saydul filmed our final shots. We re-filmed where Talia's head was slightly cut off. We then went to Dalston and filmed her in front of the culture wall, this worked really well because the colour of Talia's top was blue and parts of the wall was Blue so it went well together. Since the wall s quiet high, and Talia is quiet small, we did a low angle shot so it looked as though she was right in front of the wall, when in fact she was very far from it. The weather was freezing that morning so we tried to do 2 base tracks at each place so that we would have a definite one and a back up one, all in the time before out fingers went numb.
We then noticed that right next to where the wall is situated, there's a little public garden and we thought it would be a good place to film. So we went in asked the owner if we could use it and she said yes. We looked around the garden and saw a nice area where pink flowers were growing and we thought Talia would look good in front of it, as it will bring out the colour of her coat. We managed to get everything that we needed done, so it was a very productive day.

Extra Editing On 17th November
*Quick Update*
Today I again went into the editing suite in my own time to edit our music video and ensure that we met the rough cut deadline (which was that very day). I added one more base track which gave the video setting variation because it now shows our artist in 5 different locations. That was the only major editing that took place with the addition of smoothing out some glitches.
Extra Editing On 16th November
*Quick Update*
Today I edited the new shots we filmed on Tuesday 15th of November. These new shots are essential for the structure of our music video because effectively our artist has 4 base tracks in 4 different locations. They also allow us to keep the video moving along in a natural flow rather than staying in one location too often, repetition is feature of music videos but too much can cause the video to become stale and boring.

DAY 3 of Filming : PRODUCTION
Unfortunately I couldn't attend the filming session today due to illness, however I allocated my role as director to Saydul. Saydul & Jade knew what shots they had to re-shoot and also understood that a new base track in a new location needed to be shot. I am extremely confident in the pair to deliver the shots that we need to complete our Production and also editing process.
Skills development.
Compared to my AS planning and production I would say overall, I have improved significantly. I believe my AS group had less dedication and motivation, as a group I would say we didn’t work as well as we could have. However, with last minute preparations and a lot of stress we pulled through very luckily. What I would say went wrong was we didn’t put enough work into it and this caused us to struggle. The way we approached our planning and production was reasonably good but wasn’t our best. We did do a lot of planning, and gave it a lot of thought, which I would say pulled us through. The production such as filming was satisfying compared to our production this year. This year we are more familiar with final cut pro and put more of our time towards our production. Our filming last year was good , we made sure our shots were all focused and we used a lot of different angels , I think our shots came out really good , however I believe our editing was not the best and this put us down.
Our whole concept in AS was very smart , I think our suspenseful thriller ideas was amazing , we came out with very good ideas , but the way we demonstrated our ideas was not the best , however this was due to our lack on knowledge.
I think this year, we put a lot of time and dedication into our music video and this is showing though our work. We did a lot of planning and research on our music video. In addition we didn’t look at only one artist; we looked at several, so we could create our ideal singer. This I believe was an effective research method as we didn’t restrict our self like we did in AS.
day 2 editing.
Us editing our 2 way shot
Day 2 Editing, well I think this lesson was really productive because we used our time very wisely due to the rain we had to stop our recording. However, because of the short distance from our location to college we was able to go back to college and use the lesson wisely by editing the new footage that we had. We noticed how one of our shots had her head chopped of we was very disappointed with it but there was nothing that we can do. On the other hand we did have some good shots, such as the 2 way shot that we decided to take on the day, she was not singing in this shot but I think it goes very well when we put in final cut. What we did to make that shot more realistic and easier for Talia (main singer) was by placing myself on the other hand of the bench where she would look at me obviously when it came to editing we cut myself out and placed the two shots on top of each over so we are able to se to Talia’s on one screen.
How I Approached Planning The Music Video In Comparison to AS Thriller : SKILLS DEVELOPMENT
The first and most different between planning for a Music Video is that it requires allot more planning. Where as in the planning for the thriller I looked the genre conventions and such in Music Videos there is so much more too plan for example the storyboard. Last where my story board was only 2 pages showing the shots we would do this year I myself was tasked with creating the storyboard and by the time I was done I had used up 5 story board sheets such is the depth in which we had to plan to ensure a great music video.
We also had to plan for many locations, check the weather before hand and ensure that our Artist came on time because she was external, meaning she didn't do media and wasn't in our group. Looking back at the planning for the Thriller opening its easy to see the major difference in the amount of planning we have done, for the music video planning had to be done for every little detail from the artists hair, make-up, jewellery, body movements and so on, where as in the thriller it was easier and it was just acting.

day 1 : editing
Our first day of editing went quite well, we got most the stuff done. We started off by looking at all our clips and sorting out which one we would use. Must say we was pleased with most of our shots , I think as a group we was organised with the filming , so it didn’t course any problems with the editing. Shortly after we started our editing, luckily one of my group members had the song so we were ready to begin.
I think our editing process, was quite good because we didn’t change the story board as much which helped us identify which shots go where. Our first shot was the sky this is meant to demonstrate 5.oo in the morning, because we originally recorded the shot during the day we had to edit that shot by adding contrasts and lightning so it looks more realistic.
We then went on and jumped to our Corus and started editing our 3 way shot, which turned out to be our 2 way shot, this shot was recorded at the barbican. We realised after watching it that it didn’t fit in line so we had to cut out one of our shots, but it wasn’t so bad as it looked as great.
Allot of artists post teasers on YouTube, this in a sense creates more demand for their music video, it creates an excitement for the actual video. It helps the fans enhance a want for the video as it creates anticipation. The teasers are countdowns towards the video release. I was thinking this would be a great way to get our audiences attention as well as create a demand for our video. Teasers are a great way to get the fans involved.
There are many examples of teasers such as:
This is a great example of how artist use teasers successfully, cher Lloyd did a seven day countdown, which I thing was a excellent idea as it got more viewers excited.

My idea of a good video: RESEARCH
Here is a video that i think is Very good but it does [present the artist in a very sexual way that could either bring negative publicity and the risk of losing some fans Or bring negative publicity but gain new fans.
The reason why i like this video is because the editing is really good, and the build up to the music along side the editing to match is excitement and even though there are scenes of sexual content and nudity, its something that the audience look past simply because of the way the whole video has been edited. It truly is a fascinating video. Theres one part of it that i like the most, and its the bit where the cigarette is multicoloured, it caught my eye immediately. Enjoy the video just as much as i did.

The True Meanings Of Our Video And Artist: PRODUCTION
These words, in my opinion, basically sum up what I think our artist AND our video mean and express. Something New, True and Amazing
Ideas for a Digipack: RESEARCH
I have been thinking about how i would like my digipack to look and a few ideas have come to mind. Making the digipack shouldn't be too in terms of pictures for it, because our artist is a photographer and also enjoys being in front of the camera too. We don't just want to take a still from the filming days because we in way have an advantage over others, as our artist loves pictures, so we do want to do a full photo shoot with a good scenery.
Here is a picture of what i was i was thinking of doing in a similar way because it draws attention to our artist Talia and it makes a bold statement, also her make up is similar to how we have it in some shots of our video:
